Whether it’s discovering historic chateaux, enjoying the celebrated wines of the area, exploring medieval towns or cycling part of the 800km of designated cycle tracks, this beautiful part of the Loire Valley has it all…
Les Peupliers, our award winning farmhouse B&B & cookery school, is conveniently situated between Saumur & Chinon in the Western part of the Loire Valley. It is an ideal base to discover a wealth of treasures in the area. Here are some of our favourites:
Saumur, the equestrian capital of France is home to the internationally famous National Riding School ‘Cadre Noir’ which offers a programme of public performances and galas throughout the year. The town itself is charming with it’s splendid medieval buildings, bustling Saturday market, tank & cavalry museums and cafés.
Fontevraud Abbey, just 15 minutes away, is one of the largest surviving monastic cities from the Middle Ages. Eleanor of Aquitaine, her husband Henry II and their son Richard the Lionheart are buried in the Abbey Church.
The Chateau of Villandry is the last of the great chateaux of the Loire built during the Renaissance. It’s elegant architecture & outstanding gardens make this a ‘must see!’
The medieval town of Chinon is a town steeped in history and rich with culture. The winding streets up to the castle are lined with small shops, inns, and cafes with cobbles and timber houses dating back to the fifteenth century.
Just 5 minutes away we have Montsoreau & Candes St. Martin. Two of France’s 100 prettiest villages right on our doorstep. The riverside flea market held every second Sunday throughout the year is a great place for a stroll or mix with the locals at the Sunday morning food market where fantastic local produce is for sale.
If you want to get out and about on your bike to enjoy the very best of unspoilt nature and cultural highlights, then “La Loire à Vélo” is for you! This 800km cycle trail runs very close to Les Peupliers. Maps are available to do short sections of it, or if you prefer, cycle to one of the villages, pick up some cheese and a baguette and sit by the banks of the river Loire enjoying a picnic.
Whether relaxing by our large heated pool, reading in the shade of the chestnut trees, sampling fine cuisine, improving your culinary skills, being pampered with beauty treatments, or simply borrowing bicycles to cycle the poplar-lined, country road into the village, we aim to make your stay at Les Peupliers a relaxing and enjoyable one.
